Fond du Lac’s Kenan Saleh
For some kids, it’s a game of catch in the backyard that strengthens the bond between a father and son. For others, it may be shooting baskets in the driveway, going for a run together or trekking around a golf course. For Fond du Lac’s Kenan Saleh, it happened on the tennis court.
Starting as a 6-year-old, yes it was fun chasing the bouncing balls, hitting them back over the net with all of his might and learning about the game of tennis. But what kept him returning to the court as often as he could was that he was doing all of those things with his father, Haydar. “To some degree, what got me into tennis was that I played with my father,” Saleh said. “I just enjoyed (playing tennis) with my father.” Saleh has certainly progressed from those early days, too.
The senior, who was a state qualifier in singles last season while playing at the No. 1 flight, is now one-half of the Cardinals’ formidable No. 1 doubles pairing along with junior Matt Riley. It isn’t often a state-caliber singles player will make the switch to doubles, but the two friends had an inkling they could form a pretty special pairing and so Saleh made the change. “We were talking and we thought we could do really well together,” Saleh said of he and Riley, a state qualifier in doubles last year. “We played together for fun and we were doing pretty well, so we just decided that it would be a good idea to play doubles together.”
Making the switch, though, is not as simple as just being put on a different spot on the line-up card. Saleh, who had played doubles as a freshman, had to alter the way he played from when he was just out on the court by himself. “Definitely there is a huge difference between singles and doubles. They are completely different with the way you strategize, the way you play,” Saleh said. “In singles, I’d mostly stay at the back of the court on the baseline and played from back there and I needed to learn how to transition from the baseline to the net, much more often and with greater confidence. “I worked real hard over the winter to get that part of my game up to par.”
The duo recently completed a perfect weekend at the Waukesha West Invitational, where the ninth-ranked Cardinals breezed through two days of competition. Saleh and Riley are off to a 7-0 start as a pairing and Saleh has his sights set high for the twosome. “I expect to be in Madison playing again this year,” Saleh said. “Last year (at state), obviously I was pretty nervous because of the stage but I thought it was a good experience. I liked the atmosphere there and I think now I can be better prepared for next time.” Saleh’s rise didn’t just happen either. After getting his start in the sport, Saleh said he began taking lessons at about age 10 as he started to become more serious about the sport.
Once he got to high school, he found another fountain of tennis skill and knowledge in former teammate Kyle Dunn. Saleh said Dunn, who now plays at Valparaiso, served as a mentor to him, especially his sophomore season when the two played at the top two singles flights for the Cardinals. “Kyle was my biggest mentor, not only with tennis, but with everything. He taught me a lot about the sport of tennis, about high school and life in general,” Saleh said. “Hitting with him was definitely a plus because he was such a high-caliber opponent. He had so much knowledge of the game and insight he gave me. “Watching him at state and whatnot inspired me to work harder and achieve some of the stuff that he achieved.”
Saleh has tried to pass on the same tutelage he received to his younger teammates, but one of the ways he tries to lead the squad is simply by showing his passion for the game. “I never really feel like I need a break because I really enjoy competing in tennis,” Saleh said. “I wouldn’t want to do anything else.” This may be Saleh’s last season of competitive tennis, though, since he doesn’t plan on playing collegiately next season. Yet, he has no plans on giving up the life-long sport entirely. Whether it’s club-level tennis, intramurals or just playing recreationally, he’s certain to be on a court somewhere.
Even without playing at the next level, Saleh definitely has a library of memorable matches and victories that he can recall at any point. He even has a match in mind as the one he will probably still be talking about 10 or 15 years down the road. It just hasn’t happened yet.”Hopefully,” he said, “it’s one from later this season at Madison.”

Cardinals aiming for another successful season
The Fond du Lac boys tennis team will have a different look to it in 2015, but second-year coach Joe Sagen believes the Cardinals could have another successful season.
Last year, Fond du Lac finished second in the Fox Valley Association regular season and third in the conference tournament, but loses No. 4 singles player Tyriek Yazdani, Nos. 1 and 2 doubles players Stuart Nett (a WIAA state tournament qualifier) and Mitch Riley and the entire No. 3 doubles team of Johannes Neuerer and Ian Tess-Wanant from that squad.
“With the graduation of some key seniors, the lineup will be quite different from last year,” Sagen said. “As the younger players develop over the summer and offseason, the makeup of our team is yet to be defined. In a sport such as tennis all players are key to a win.”
No. 1 singles and defending state qualifier Kenan Saleh leads the returning Cardinals and he has a legitimate shot to make it back to Madison. While the positions may not be the same this year, No. 2 singles Matt Schneider, No. 3 singles Felix Cloutier, No. 4 singles Matt Tentler, No. 1 doubles Matt Riley and No. 2 doubles Ethan Pieper all return, as does Moosa Syed, who was an exhibition player last year.
“We’ll play as smart and hard as we can,” Sagen said. “Improve every day and learn from every match. Be successful in every match.”
